Being told to write my own eulogy* made me think about this further- even getting told to write my eulogy felt somewhat strange. Who thinks about writing their own eulogy? Many thoughts ran through my mind. What do I write? What will I have achieved in life? Actually, what have I already achieved in life?
In life there are many people work towards an end goal. But is it good to be so futuristic? Do we practise our lives in a way that we are able to say- “that day was not wasted?” It is the effort put in to our everyday lives which account for that big "something" most people aim to achieve in the future.
Most people in the world are able to dedicate the first part of their lives to education- aiming for a career at the end; but what else can you do to make a difference in the society or the world we live in today? If everyone set about with this thought from their birth the world would be a very different place.
As Swami Vivekananda said, “Arise, awake, stop not till the goal is achieved.” This is the motto I choose to live my life with on a daily basis. I feel all tasks that we carry out on a day to day basis should be done whole heartedly and to the best of our ability.
So... what will be in your eulogy?
*Eulogy: A speech at a funeral about the person who has died.
